36' Ken Smith Trawler: Captain Ben Pine

The Capt. Ben Pine is a 36 foot wooden trawler that was built in 1961 by Tim McDonnell in Old Lyme, Connecticut.

The boat was designed by renowned naval architect Ken Smith who made his name designing the Grand Banks line of trawlers.

The boat was designed to the specifications of the original owner who was retiring from sail and wanted a sea kindly power boat for long range cruising.

She was the featured boat in the August 1965 issue of Yachting Magazine.

Overall, the boat was in excellent condition for her age - a testament to her diligent maintenance and fine original construction.

However, the boat interior and exterior were in need of scraping and painting after she had sat in storage for the previous eight years.

The boat also required a refastening below the waterline and had quite a few broken frames.

Almost fifty new oak sister frames laminated in West System epoxy were bent into place spanning from the transom to the main bulkhead.

Eight cedar planks were also replaced and the bottom refastened with silicon bronze screws.

The last four pictures on this page show the refastening being done.

Over several months the Newman and Gray crew refinished the boat to the highest standards and the electrical systems were all upgraded.

As is evident from the photos the boat is a magnificent example of a classic wooden trawler. This wonderful boat is for sale.
